An assumption is an unexamined belief: what we think without realizing we think it. Our inferences (also called conclusions) are often based on assumptions that we haven’t thought about critically. A critical thinker. however. is attentive to these assumptions because they are sometimes incorrect or misguided.
When they are not synonymous. it’s helpful to remember that assumptions are not based on proof. whereas presumptions are based on proof. Unusual uses of the words can be remembered in this way: When “presume” is used to mean “dare. “ try substituting the word “dare” for “presume. “ If the meaning of the sentence is the same. use the word “presume. “
How do assumptions relate to the process of critical thinking? Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing. applying. analyzing. synthesizing. and/or evaluating information gathered from. or generated by. observation. experience. reflection. reasoning. or communication. as a guide to . . .
Prior knowledge is one of the features associated with assumptions. which interferes with critical thinking. An individual is tempted to belief that he or she knows something because of the past encounter. This might encourage an individual to employ a defective strategy in tackling an issue.

A presumption is an idea that is taken to be true on the basis of probability. This noun is derived from the verb presume. An assumption can turn out to be true since it is based on probability. In terms of accuracy. a presumption may be more accurate than an assumption.
The critical thinking process is a model for how to analyze an issue. This process includes steps and questions that help you to think through a topic more thoroughly. First. a person will state . . .
Assumption-spotting is perhaps the most crucial practical skill in Critical Thinking. The key issue here is whether what you think may be an assumption is actually necessary to the argument. If you assume that someone is making an assumption that they are not making. then obviously this is unfair.
This practice critical thinking test will assess yourability to make inferences and logical assumptions and to reason with supported arguments. Read the instructions and answer the questions. There are a total of 14 questionsin this test and you should aim to correctly answer as many questions as you can within 30 minutes. For personal use only.
